Changing Dallas, One Superhero at a time.
Sometimes it’s hard to be a kid. It can be a lot harder for kids with special needs and chronic medical conditions. That’s why Union has adopted superhero children as our cause for the Summer of 2015.
We are splitting 10% of all coffee-related sales between two incredible charities: Capes 4 Kids and SEEK Camp. Every time you walk into Union and purchase anything with coffee in it, 10% helps these outstanding organizations.
CAPES 4 KIDS got its start at Union. The brainchild of two nurses and Union regulars, C4K transforms Union into a cape-making factory every month. Volunteers crank out as many kid-sized capes (plus bears from the scraps) as they can. Then a group of costumed volunteers deliver the capes to children in area pediatric hospitals.
This spring, Common Desk provided the site for our first ever MEGA FACTORY. 100 volunteers teamed up to cut, sew and iron over 130 capes. Lover’s Lane United Methodist Church and the Mayor’s Star Council joined in on the fun to make it an incredible day. Other supporters include KIND Bars, Zico and Glazed Donut Works.
This summer, Capes 4 Kids will make their first delivery to SEEK camp (see below). We can’t wait!
SEEK Camp organizes summer events for exceptional campers by providing a 24-hour camp experience for children with special needs. This is a gift not only to the kids, but also to the parents who benefit from time off from 24-7 parenting. Parents and campers alike rave about SEEK.
Words cannot express what your camp has meant to my daughter and me. The fact that she has a place to go for this kind of experience, where she is not only cared for but accepted for who she is…that’s huge! I know she has a great time because she watches the video over and over…and over…and over. Sometimes she even packs her backpack and goes and gets in the car, saying “Camp”.
We are thrilled to support SEEK Camp with funds to support their work as well as a team of caped-volunteers who will put capes on the backs of all of these child-sized heroes!
